Real exchange rates and real interest rate differentials: A present value interpretation
Although the real exchange rate real interest rate (RERI) relationship is central to most open economy macroeconomic models, empirical support for the relationship is generally found to be rather weak. In this paper we re-investigate the RERI relationship using bilateral U.S. real exchange rate data spanning the period 1978 to 2007. Instead of testing one particular model, we build on Campbell ...
متن کاملA Re-examination of the link between Real Exchange Rates and Real Interest Rate Differentials∗
The real exchange rate real interest rate (RERI) relationship is central to most open economy macroeconomic models. However, empirical support for the relationship, especially when cointegrationbased methods are used, is rather weak. In this paper we reinvestigate the RERI relationship using bilateral real exchange rate data spanning the period 1978 to 1997. We first clarify the logic of applyi...
متن کاملReal Exchange Rates and Real Interest Rate Parity: The Case of China
Abstract This paper empirically examines the likelihood of any long-run relationship between real exchange rate and real interest rate (RERI) differentials in China using vector autoregressive model (VAR) and hybrid cointegration methodology. The preliminary results based on some limited monthly data are indicative of a rather weak long run relationship. However, the empirical investigation als...
متن کاملReal Effective Exchange Rate and Trade Performance in Iran
The Purpose of this paper is to investigate the long-run effect of real effective exchange rate on Iran non-oil trade balance. The methodology is based on ARDL procedure that can be applied irrespective of whether the regressors are I(0) or I(1). The results show the real depreciation has not a favorable long - run effect on the non-oil trade balance of Iran from 1979 to 2001.
متن کاملHabit Formation, the World Real Interest Rate, and the Present Value Model of the Current Account
A recent study reports that habit formation in consumption can improve the ability of the present value model of the current account (PVM) to forecast actual current account movements because habits make the current account more volatile. This paper, however, shows that the habit-forming PVM is observationally equivalent to the canonical PVM augmented with a transitory consumption shock: the sa...
